The dawn of the Widget Widget Web ..
The World Wide Web as we know it, is exploding. From its fragments emerges a new ‘container based’ Web based on Widgets.
For the lack of a better word, I shall call it a Widget Widget Web
I have long advocated the power of Widgets to transform the Web as we know it. Hence, I am starting a new set of blogs on the future potential and evolution of Widgets. Recently, Om Malik also wrote a great article Suddenly everything’s coming up widgets. The goal of the Widget Widget web series of blogs is to discuss the evolution of the Web using the Widgets philosophy…

Continue...Wide Area Wireless and Freedom of Movement
This week I was out at EPIC giving a paper, and had not only enjoyed Portland, our hosts at Intel, and the company of the many great people I met while out there, I also had a pleasant experience with wi-fi. Sitting at Chicago O’Hare I stared at the signs for paid wi-fi and wondered why it has to be so difficult to get wireless access in many public places. On the flight from O’Hare to Portland, I noticed in the inflight magazine (forgot to bring a book) that PDX provides free wi-fi. What a difference. Stepping off my flight, I was able to open my laptop, pick up the network right away, and check mail and my hotel information. I snapped my MacBook shut and headed downtown to my hotel.
Arriving at the Hotel Lucia, I opened my machine up in my room and immediately got no fewer than eight wireless networks on my AirPort, several of which were free. I opted for the hotel-provided wi-fi, and with my roomate for this trip, Andy, we had three laptops running connected with little effort. The next day, arriving at Intel’s Hillsboro facility, my and other attendee’s faces lit up upon sitting down for morning coffee as we picked up guest wi-fi within the building. As a result, we were able to stay attached during the event, and in my case I was able to fetch images of Flickr to freshen up my presentation on the fly. Portland takes wireless connectivity seriously, and is in the early stages of installing a metro wireless network for use by the city and its residents. Pretty much anywhere I needed wireless Internet on this trip I had it (except Chicago!)…

I dislike RFID tags for a varienty of reasons. When RFID tags are used to protect Palm OS handhelds, I can understand this. However, I recently bought a 3$ tin of hair gel and saw this:
