Qwest profits hit by tax charge

The US wireline operator Qwest Communications International has reported a 35% drop in first-quarter net income to USD157 million after the company registered a USD99 million tax expense and USD45 million of redundancy payments. Quarterly revenue fell 1.4% to USD3.4 billion. Qwest ended the quarter with 12.5 million access lines, down 7.8%, though it did add 90,000 net new high speed internet customers to take its broadband subscriber base to 2.7 million.
