Sponsored Post: cellity Launches freeSMS Application on Facebook
cellity is taking the free SMS functionality from their mobile software and bringing it to Facebook, the second largest social networking site in the world. The application on Facebook has all the same functionality as the freeSMS client that runs on your mobile phone. You can even send and receive messages between the two!
One nice thing about using freeSMS is that text messages aren't limited to 160 characters. This is because the text messages travel over the data networks, meaning you will need to have some kind of data service with your mobile phone to use freeSMS. Using the application from Facebook eliminates that requirement.

In what I believe is a first for the U.S. market, Phone News is reporting that AT&T is now offering unlimited MEdia Net access on their pay as you go prepaid plans for $20 every month. AT&T had been offering this service as part of their “Pick Your Plan” prepaid plans, which look like conventional post-paid plans without a contract, but that meant paying at least $50 a month just to use unlimited data.
The only thing even close to this is T-Mobile prepaid Sidekick plan, but it only works with the Sidekick and costs more ($30/mo). With AT&T's unlimited MEdia Net, you can use any unlocked GSM phone for $20 a month with no requirement for voice service.
In order to get this service, you must call 611 and request the unlimited MEdia Net add-on be added to your account. The add-on is good for 30 days.

Chances are, if you're a mobile phone phone geek like I am, you've probably acquired all kinds of mobile devices—not just phones—that need charging. Regularly. The way I use my mobile phones, they need charging daily.
One such solution to this problem is the GoMadic Charging Station. It allows you to charge up to four devices simultaneously with a single power connection. Unlike some solutions, which are nothing more than power strips in disguise, this is an entirely self-contained system. It does use a proprietary “tip” solution, meaning you need adaptors for your specific brand of mobile device.
Looks like an interesting system, and at $50 (not counting extra tips), it's reasonably priced. Get a complete review of the unit over at Phone News.

If you've ever downloaded any mobile software, chances are you've downloaded a few applications from the GetJar service—I know that I have. GetJar is saying they've had over 200 million software downloads in the past 2 years alone!
What's driving all those downloads? Free applications, of course. One application that is seeing massive growth, according to GetJar, is cellity Communicator. And why not? It's a free app and it enables a lot of functionality, such as cheap calls, free SMS, Twitter, and more!

Continue...Nokia N95 9GB NAM
I recently got a chance to play with a Nokia N95 8GB North American edition, a.k.a. the Nokia N95-4. It is quite an improvement for me over the original Nokia N95 that I currently carry.
The most important feature this version of the Nokia N95 has is North American 3G support! This means you can use the HSDPA provided by AT&T or Rogers—provided you have a SIM with them. It also supports a higher capacity battery and more memory.
Too bad I had to send this phone back. It would have been a great upgrade.

Last week, I discovered-quite by accident-that the version of iSkoot for the Nokia N95 was sending the entire session in the clear. In short, your Skype credentials, and everything you were using iSkoot for on Skype, was being sent unencrypted from your mobile phone.
For those who don't know, iSkoot provides the ability to use Skype from a mobile handset. IM is supported directly from the handset. Voice calls go over the standard voice network, but are redirected through iSkoot's gateways so you can use your Skype minutes to make those expensive international calls much cheaper.
While this isn't such a big deal on the cellular networks, where it is not as easy for people to see what's being sent, it becomes a problem with dual-mode handsets over WiFi. It's also just the principle of the thing.
I reported this problem on my blog on a Friday night. By Saturday afternoon, with some help from my friends Andy Abramson, Jim Courtney, and Dan York, I had the attention of iSkoot's CEO, whom I sent more details to confirm my findings. By Sunday afternoon, we had a confirmation they see the problem and will fix it. Today, I confirmed their new client was available and did not have the issue.
The update to the iSkoot client should be forced, but if not, go download the latest version for your S60 device. iSkoot clients on other platforms are unaffected.

While those of you who read the The Mobile Technology Weblog are undoubtedly aware of the cellity Communicator, mobile software that allows you send free text messages and make cheap calls to foreign countries, not everyone is—particularly in the United States. cellity decided the best place to demonstrate the app was at the recent CTIA conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, which included some expanded functionality.
The app will allow you to send an email to a mobile phone without needing to know the recipient's email address as well as encrypted emails. Not quite sure how that will work, but that's what the press release says.
The expanded cellity Communication application is not available yet. It is expected at the end of April 2008.

While Nokia has had a number of different external blogging efforts going on, Nokia now has an official blog called Nokia Conversations. It is written by Nokia employees, or people paid by Nokia, to articulate the stories going on throughout the company.
Nokia Conversations will not only highlight the great stories inside the company, but it will highlight some of the conversations going on around the blogosphere. There is a del.icio.us bar along the side with a number of references to other blog entries written about Nokia. People are also encouraged to comment, of course.

Rather than wait for iPhones to start shipping with application support, the folks at Fring have decided to release an iPhone version of their IM and VoIP client. This means, for the moment, you must have a jailbroken iPhone to install the software.
Fring provides the ability to make and receive VoIP calls over WiFi, and on non-iPhones, the mobile operator's data network. You also get support for IM as well through the usual networks.
I wonder if Apple is going to allow this app in iTunes once the applications start being official and all.

Truphone, known more for enabling WiFi calling and SMS on Nokia handsets than being a traditional wireless carrier, is now going to be just that. Truphone recently announced they have acquired the assets of SIM4travel, a UK-based mobile virtual network operator. SIM4travel is very similar to Pat Phelan's Roam4Free service which substantially cuts your mobile roaming rates.
Prior to this acquisition, the only thing Truphone didn't have was the ability to make calls over GSM natively. They already did SMS-a major step along the way to being a mobile phone operator-and of course they operate on mobile phones, albeit Nokia ones over WiFi. It's the first carrier I am aware of that will support GSM and WiFi using SIP.

Every once in a while, I run across a human-interest story that's both touching and sad. It's also not often we hear of a mobile network operator doing the right thing by someone, either.
The report from FOXNews is that an 80-year old widower was calling his wife's voicemail on Verizon Wireless daily-just to hear her say her name. However, in a recent upgrade of the Verizon Wireless voicemail system, her greeting was erased!
Fortunately, the fine folks at Verizon Wireless found an old archived recording of his deceased wife saying her name and restored it to the voicemail system. Now the widower can continue to hear her wife's voicemail greeting-at least until the next Voicemail upgrade.
