Nokia spent some time discussing the future of their N-Gage mobile gaming platform at 3GSM last week. The N-Gage as a mobile phone was killed off last year. However, N-Gage as a mobile gaming platform, incorporated into other Nokia phones, will live on. In an interview with GamaSutra, Jani Karlsson (Nokia’s Senior Manager for N-Gage) discussed how Nokia will improve the tools used by content developers to create N-Gage games, make the N-Gage more powerful as platform, and revealed that Nokia will be “announcing quite a few things at GDC [Game Developer’s Conference]” next month.

Downtown London Cloud

Posted by Daily Wireless on February 21st, 2006

The Cloud
, a hotspot operator with operations in the UK, Sweden and Germany, has entered a partnership with the City of London to create a WiFi cloud throughout a square mile in downtown London.

Cloud Networks currently runs several Wi-Fi hotspots in London, including the Canary Wharf, the British Library and Coffee Republic, a chain of cafés. It also rents out service to operators like BT’s OpenZone and Nintendo. Those operators in turn charge their customers for the service.

The City of London
is now London’s main financial district. It is often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 square kilometres) in area.

Blanket Wi-Fi access in the downtown area is expected within six months. The network will be installed on lamp posts and signs. Because of the City’s high buildings and narrow streets, more than 150 hotspots will be needed to ensure coverage. The network is also designed to support secure access and private data networks for the emergency services.

Demand has increased for wireless coverage of the City’s 350,000 workers. The Cloud won the bid to install the network, but the value of the deal has not been disclosed.

AT&T Wireless + Yahoo

Posted by Daily Wireless on February 21st, 2006

The AT&T Yahoo Go Mobile service is part of the Yahoo Go brand. Yahoo hopes to make its services available to users on a variety of devices from mobile phones to computers to televisions.

"It’s the first kind of baby steps toward this whole concept of an anytime-anywhere device," said Matt Davis, director of consumer multiplay services at IDC, a market research firm in Framingham, Massachusetts.

Go Mobile, which will be available on the Nokia 6682 mobile phone, will be sold online, in AT&T’s 13-state service area. The unlimited monthly service costs about $19.99 a month, an AT&T spokesman said.

The phone also includes an MP3 music player and a digital voice recorder and costs $199.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate from Nokia with a two-year subscription to a Cingular wireless service plan. Cingular is the nation’s largest wireless company and jointly owned by AT&T and BellSouth.

Nokia’s 1.3 megapixel 6682 might also be handy for Moblogs (Mobile Blogs).

The phone can run Nokia’s LifeBlog software as well as the free ShoZu (beta) application which enables easy photo uploads to a number of free photo services including Yahoo’s Flickr, Buzznet, TextAmerica and Webshots. ShoZu users can share full quality images and video content and enables two-way interactive comment sharing.

New Zealand incumbent Telecom Corp says it has restructured its ailing Australian business AAPT, but admits it is still looking for a buyer for the firm. AAPT is being split into two divisions – consumer and corporate – both of which will be headed up by senior Telecom executives. The restructuring will not affect the parent company’s review of AAPT, started in January, nor any potential sale or joint venture with another investor. Telecom wrote down the value of its Ozzie operation by NZD900 million (USD602 million) earlier this month.
